Phu Phra Bat historical park is set down itself on a mountain called Phu Phra Bat located in Mueang Pan area, Ban Phue District, Udon Thani Province. It is a part of sandstone mountain range of Phu Phan which is on the west side of Udon Thani Province on its height of 320 – 350 meters above the mean sea level on the average. However, the overview landscape is generally sparse forest and covered by the traditional plants of hardwood trees.
Referring to the past archeological examination, the area on Phu Phra Bat mountain has been proved for some activities of prehistoric humans taken place around 2,500 – 3,000 years ago. As for the sample of over 54 sources of art paintings that were uncovered on this mountain. Besides, the traditional rock shelters were also found and consequently adapted to be places of worship for people from Dvaravati, Khmer, Lan Chang and Rattanakosin cultures. Those archeological discoveries have greatly shown the social changes in Northeast Thailand.

For this reason, the Fine Arts Department has requested the permission from Royal Forest Department for 5,488 square kilometers of area in the national reserved forest to develop this site to be the historical park as the announcement and registration listed in Government Gazette, Volume 98 on April 28th, 1981. Afterwards, it has been finally come out as Phu Phra Bat historical park and officially opened by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on June 26th, 1992.
Phu Phra Bat historical park currently becomes a division under the 8th Regional Office, Khon Kaen of the Fine Arts Department which belongs to Ministry of Culture. As the past missions, 78 historical sites in the responsible regions have been already protected. Their main responsibilities are maintaining, conserving, developing and researching about historical sites and antiques in the historical park as well as nearby area. Also it is opened as a tourist attraction and cultural learning center for general people.
