Prasat Phanom Rung is situated on the top of Phanom Rung Mountain which is an extinct volcano and located in Tambon Ta Pek, Amphoe Chaloem Phra Kiat, Buriram Province. It is the historical site of Khmer Art and also one of the most beautiful and important in Thailand.

This religious place was built to dedicate Shiva, a supreme god of Hinduism in Shaivism. The Phanom Rung Mountain and the Prasat Phanom Rung on the hilltop are compared as Kailash Mountain, a throne-hall of Shiva and also a symbol of the center of the universe. A group of buildings on the hill top were constructed for many periods since the 15^th – 18^th century Buddha.

“Phanom Rung” is the name from “Wanang Rung”, the Khmer language which meant to a vast mountain that appeared in Khmer inscriptions found at Prasat Phanom Rung and also the name of the creator of Prasart Phanom Rung as “Narentharathitta” of a lineage from Mahithon Pura dynasty, who is related to the cousin of the King Suriya Woraman II, the creator of Angkor Wat.

The Fine Arts Department has conserved Prasat Phanom Rung by announced the registration of the Prasat Phanom Rung historical site in the Government Gazette, 52^nd volume, 75^th part, on 8^th March 2478, and reconstructed the Prasat during 2514 and 2531 B.E. Then, specified an area of 451 Rai, 11 Tarang Wa (0.7491 square kilometers) to be the historical site in the Government Gazette, 93^rd volume, 141^st part, on 9^th November 2519 and also created the historical park project, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn proceeded to preside the official opening ceremony on 21^st May 2531 B.E.
