Prasat Muang Tam is located in Khok Maung Village, Tambon Chorakhe Mak, Amphoe Prakhon Chai, Buriram Province and far from Prasat Phanom Rung to the southeast about 8 kilometers.
Prasat Muang Tam is a religious place that created as the Hindu belief and also dedicated to Shiva. It is the religious place of the city or the community. According to an archaeological research found the settlement of the large ancient community in this area, such as Ban Khok Maung, Khok Yai Kan, Khok Salong Tong, etc. and also the antiquities like daily instruments, e.g. potteries, green and brown porcelains.

These evidences illustrated the community settlement that same age with the construction of Prasat which is Klang and Baphuon Khmer arts. It can be defined age around the late of 16th century Buddha or around 1,000 years ago. The location of Prasat Muang Tam is in the route of Khmer civilization from Phra Nakhon city of Cambodia heading to the north passed Phanom Dong Rak Range, a group of Prasat Ta Moen of Surin Province and also Prasat Muang Tam and Prasat Phanom Rung to Prasat Phimai of Nakhon Ratchasima Province. It can be said that the ancient community of Prasat Muang Tam is relevant to the nearby community in the route of Khmer civilization from Phra Nakhon of Cambodia to the northeast of Thailand.
