Phra Phai Luang Temple is in the north of Sukhothai and has an implication of Sukhothai history in architectural buildings and art decoration constructed from the early age to the late age of Sukhothai. The oldest archaeological buildings are 3 Prasart stupas which remaining complete structure is only at the north Prasart. The other 2 Prasarts are collapsed and left only their bases. The temple is presumed to be constructed in the middle of 18th B.E. and adopted the influence of Lop Buri art representing Khmer culture growth in the central part of Thailand. In the north of the temple, except the sanctuary, is found a pyramid- shaped stupa decorated with Buddha image arches in descending order as seen at Ku Kud stupa in Lamphun Province. This stupa is evident a reconstruction in many ages of Sukhothai. In the east of the temple is a Mon Dop installed a range of Buddha images in different gestures form walking, standing and reclining. It is assumed that the Mon Dop was built in the late Sukhothai age. |
