Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park is located on the east bank of Ping River in Amphoe Muang, Kamphaeng Phet Province including the area of Kamphaeng Phet ancient city. This area is a river plain connected with Yom River and Nan River in the area of Phichit Province and Phitsanulok Province and also Pa Sak River in Phetchabun Province. The northern and western areas are mountain. According to the topography found that this area is proper for ancient community settlement since Prehistoric age which was convenient to communicate with Plain communities as well as being a depot community for changing transportation plan from the plain area to the mountain area in the north and west later.
In history period, this area is a dominant stronghold of warfare connecting Sukhothai with Ayutthaya and Larn Na. The archaeological evidence which found at Kamphaeng Phet town demonstrated a relevant feature with the three possessions and also developed art style and presented as the exquisite Kamphaeng Phet Art which is the remarkable identity of Kamphaeng Phet.
The landscape of Kamphaeng Phet ancient city can be seen in a trapezoid-shaped that ranged parallel with Ping River. Originally, the city rampart is 3-layerd moat and mound before developed the internal rampart to be a laterite rampart. The upper battlement created as Sema and surrounded with fortress.
The Fine Arts Department has preserved and developed the Kamphaeng Phet ancient city both announcing the registration and specifying an area of archaeological site. Furthermore, it established Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park Project which the Official Opening Ceremony is on 18th April 2534 B.E. (1991). At present, a boundary of Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park covers the areas of 3.34 square kilometers (2,114 Rai) and divided into 2 areas as follows:
1. Rampart area has the areas about 503 Rai or 0.8048 square kilometers. It is situated in Kamphaeng Phet ancient city on the east bank of Ping River with a surrounding of moat and laterite rampart.
2. Aranyik area has the areas about 1,611 Rai or 2.5776 square kilometers. It is situated on a gravel hill outside the northern rampart.
In 2534 B.E., the World Heritage Committee of the World Heritage Convention announced Sukhothai Historical Park, Si Satchanalai Historical Park and Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park to be a world heritage in the meeting at Carthage city, Tunesia because the appeared evidence illustrated art and architectural identity which is exquisite and also a masterpiece that literally created from an artistic remarkable talent. Furthermore, it illustrated a crucial identity or being the evidence which reflected the convention and civilization that has appeared until the present.
